The canalith repositioning procedure (CRP) is a non-invasive procedure that can be performed at home to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV):
- Sit on the edge of a bed
- Turn your head 45 degrees to the affected side
- Quickly lie back, keeping your head turned
- Wait 30 seconds
- Turn your head 90 degrees to the other side, without raising it
- Wait another 30 seconds
- Turn your head and body another 90 degrees to the other side, into the bed
- Wait another 30 seconds
- Sit up on the other side
Repeat these steps in multiple sets throughout the day until you haven't experienced vertigo for two days.
After the procedure, you should avoid large or fast head movements for two days. You can use a collar or towel to limit head movement, and you should avoid activities like visiting the gym, dentist, or hairdresser.
Most people experience immediate relief after performing the maneuver, but it may take a few tries in some cases. You may have mild symptoms for a couple of weeks, but once they go away, you don't need to keep doing the maneuver.
A trained professional should determine if these exercises are appropriate for you and help ensure that you're performing them correctly.
