A Roman leather brief from the 2nd century CE, discovered in Trier, Germany, is made of goat leather and designed like a bikini bottom with decorative cut-outs and laces tied at the hips. Only seven similar leather briefs are known. Scholars are unsure whether they served as underwear or were worn by female performers such as acrobats. A terracotta figurine from Egypt shows a comparable garment, suggesting this style may have been known elsewhere in the Roman world.
Trier was an important Roman city called Augusta Treverorum, and today it still has many Roman monuments, including the famous Porta Nigra.
