According to the reports, Trump is highly interested in formally calling on wealthy Arab nations like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar to literally "pay for the cost of the Iran War."
This is the ultimate return of Trump's highly transactional "America First" foreign policy. The logic from the Oval Office is blunt: the US military is expending massive resources, surging up to 10,000 troops, and risking American lives to neutralize a regime that primarily threatens its Arab neighbors. Therefore, Washington believes those neighbors should write the checks.
But this puts the Gulf states in an absolutely terrifying, impossible Catch-22.
Right now, Arab diplomats are sitting in Islamabad desperately trying to mediate a ceasefire to stop this exact war. If they agree to fund the US military campaign, Tehran will instantly view them as active, hostile combatants, potentially turning Dubai or Riyadh into the next targets for Iranian ballistic missiles. But if they refuse to pay Trump's bill, they risk the US packing up its defense umbrella and leaving them entirely exposed.
As the war burns through billions of dollars a day, the financial standoff has officially begun.
