- Stanford Meeting

Last month the Northern California Chapter of SUTA has organized a meeting at Stanford University with the motto:
Stanford-Sharif: Decades of Mutual Contributions
Because no official report of this meeting has yet been distributed, I would like to give you a short account of this perfect, and memorable event that was attended by almost 300 people.

The program included an introduction from SUTA’s president, Dr. Fariba Aria, a message from Dr. Saeed Sohrabpour, the president of Sharif University, four speeches, and five recognitions.
Professor Bruce Wooley, Professor Thomas Lee from the EE department of Stanford, Professor Friedrich Prinz the head of the ME department of Stanford, and Professor Fabian Pease, the former head of the graduate admission office of the EE department, were among the speakers.

A video clip about Dr. Simin Daneshvar, one of the first Iranians studied at Stanford that due to health condition was not able to attend, was produced by Stanford graduate students

A musical performance by Iranian students was part of the program.

In conclusion of the event the founders of both Universities, Mr. Leland Stanford and Dr. Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi were remembered and recognized.

The success of this event was due to the hard work of SUTA members, in particular Mr. Mohamamd Hekmat, Presient of PSA (Persian Student Association at Stanford), other members of PSA, and above all Dr. Jalil Kamali who was Board member and Vice-president of SUTA from 2000 - 2002. He masterfully hosted the program that received numerous positive responses.
Ms. A. J. Caves, an Iranian who writes story books based on Persian history and the title of her last book is ROXANA ROMANCE, sent the following message:

" ....the best Iranian event I have participated in was the SUTA event at Stanford that you kindly invited me ."

The event was partially sponsored by Alvand Technologies, Inc.

Recognition of Mr. Stanford and Dr. Mojtahedi
by Dr. F. Hojabri

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Our last recognition this evening goes to these two noblemen who could not be here with us tonight. In fact given the circumstances, we did not even ask them to join. Nonetheless their spirit is hard to miss around here as their vision and dedication touched us all and shaped our lives. They never met one another but they were truly the pious men who Sa’di told us about, as Dr. Kamali quoted, “the ones you could trust them with the hair.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, our recognition goes to the founders of two great institutions.

Mr. Leland Stanford along with his wife, Ms. Jane Eliza Stanford founded Stanford University in memory of their lost son in late 1800’s, and generously donated their fortune to this noble cause. Their vision made a history and in less than a century created one of the best universities of the world.

In another corner of the world, in Iran, Dr. Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi did not have a fortune to build a university of his own, but he believed in the youth of Iran, He was among the first Iranian students sent abroad for higher education in 1930’s. Upon completing his study in France, he returned to Iran and served the country’s education system for several decades.

In 1965 he was asked to build a new university, called Aryamehr University of Technology that is known today as Sharif university of Technology, and be its first Chancellor.
He accepted the challenge as it was his dream project. Through his worldwide travel campaign, he managed to assemble a world class faculty, equip modern university laboratories, and attract the most talented Iranian students. Today Sharif University of Technology is probably the most prestigious Iranian University in science and Engineering.

(Looking at the screen with the pictures of Mr. Stanford and Dr. Mojtahedi): Gentlemen, you managed to achieve a lot. On behalf of everyone in the audience I salute you both.

May many people, especially those who have the means and power, the influential people, follow your footsteps and build when they can, take the steps of reaching out, and use the language of wisdom and reason.
May the great institutions that you built, will forever be the center of excellence that they are today.
