Avanes (Hovhannes) Simonyan Singerdy (or Sangerdin / Singerdy), an Armenian Christian resident of Isfahan, was killed during a joint U.S. and Israeli airstrike on a residential area in Baharestan, Isfahan (Haftoun neighborhood or its surroundings) on March 5 or 6, 2026 (approximately Esfand 15–16, 1404).Iranian officials (including the Deputy Governor for Security Affairs of Isfahan Province) announced that around 26 people were killed in the attack on the residential area, more than half of whom were women and children. Avanes Simonyan has been identified as the first Christian/Armenian martyr of these clashes.The Armenian community of Isfahan and Armenian media outlets (such as the Alik newspaper) have also confirmed the news. He was killed at his workplace or office during the bombing.Details of the ceremonies (according to Fars News Agency):• Farewell ceremony: Today (March 30, 2026) at 21:30 in Isfahan, Hakim Nezami Street, between the alley of Vank Church and Ghandi Street (near the Art University).• Funeral ceremony: Tomorrow (March 31) at 10:30 at St. Mary Church, Tohid Street, Saint Mary Street.This event is part of a new phase of broader military tensions between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other, which began in late February / early March 2026 and has included reciprocal missile, drone, and air attacks on infrastructure, bases, and at times residential areas. Iran has also carried out multiple missile and drone operations (with code names such as “God, Lord of the World”) against American and Israeli targets.He belonged to the historic Armenian community of Isfahan (New Julfa).• This is the first reported case of the killing of a Christian/Armenian citizen in this round of attacks, although additional civilian casualties (including children) have been reported in Isfahan.
