Abstract
This essay traces the history of Satan through both literary and Biblical sources to John Milton’s Paradise Lost. Milton presents evil as real and traceable to a single evil one. However, his depiction of Satan as the author of all evil was not completely successful as critics have pointed out that his Satan does have heroic qualities.
