گرچه درهِنگامه همه دودگِن دِهشَت و شیطان صِفتَی نبرد دریائی، کوسه ها بینی که چون گرسنه سگ ها گِرد میزی که سرش سرخ گوشت بُرَند مُشتاقانه چشم به بالا و عرشه کشتی دوخته آماده اند هر کشتـه که پیششان اندازَند فرو برند؛ و گرچه دلاور خونریزان سر میزِعرشه چنین وحشیانه زنده زنده گوشت یکدیگر را با مُطَلّا کاردهای گوشت بُری منگوله دار می بُرَند، کوسه ها نیز زیر میز با دهانهای نگین دار ستیزه جویانه گوشت مِیِّت کَنَند، و با این که گَر کُلِّ قضیه را وارونه می کردید، باز هم نتیجه، همان پیشه هولناک کوسه وار، تقریبأ و در حد کفایت برای هر دو دسته، یکسان می ماند؛ و گرچه کوسه ها ثابت جلودارانِ تمامی بَرده کِش های گُذَری از اقیانوس اطلس اند و مُنَظَّمأ کنار کشتی روانَند تا چنانچه بسته ای باید به جائی بُرده، یا مُرده بَرده ای مُحتَرَمانه دفن شود، در دسترس باشند؛ و گرچه می توان یکی دو مثال مشابه دیگر آورد که کوسه ها حسب شرایط، مکان و مناسبت، به آمیزگارانه ترین شکل جمع شده و شادمانه ترین سور چرانند؛ با این حال هیچ زمان یا مناسبت قابل تصوری نیست که بتوانید آنها را چنین بی شمار و با روحیه ای مسرور تر و مَلَنگ تر از تجمعشان گرد جسد نهنگ عنبری یابید که شب هنگام به کشتی وال گیری بسته شده. گر هیچگاه چنین منظره ای ندیده اید صدورِ قرار درستی شیطان پَرَستی و اِقتِضای اِستِمالَتِ شیطان را مسکوت گذارید." ملویل، موبی دیک، ص. 450
