The Christmas the Little Girl Mailed a Letter to God
Chicago – December 23, 1928
Seven-year-old Evelyn Harper wrote a letter to God asking only that her unemployed father find work so they wouldn’t lose their apartment before Christmas. She addressed it “God, Heaven” and dropped it in the mailbox.
A kind postman, seeing the address, opened it and showed it to his route’s merchants. By Christmas Eve, twenty shop owners had chipped in to pay the family’s rent for a year and hired Evelyn’s father as a delivery driver.
On Christmas morning, Evelyn found a reply letter under the tree: “Dear Evelyn, Your faith delivered the message faster than any postman could. Love, God (with help from friends below).”
She kept that letter her whole life and became a postmistress herself.
