“President Trump is engaged in mafia-style blackmail, with his threats ultimately harming the American people,” Van Hollen stated.
“He is threatening to double down on the failed actions of Elon Musk and his chainsaw — going after patriotic civil servants that provide Americans with critical services — despite having to rehire many of these workers after Americans experienced the negative impact of those cuts,” he went on.
“These dedicated workers have nothing to do with the ongoing political and policy disputes that have brought us to the brink of a shutdown,” Van Hollen added. “These threats are not only an attack on Americans’ services and benefits, they’re also likely illegal. We’ll be fighting back with every tool we have.”
Van Hollen's remarks come in the wake of the revelation that MAGA hatchet man Russell Vought, the incompetent Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, is ordering federal agencies to prepare for mass firings if Congress fails to extend federal funding beyond September 30th.
If such a shutdown occurs, it will be laid directly at the feet of Donald Trump and the Republican Party because they control every branch of government. This firing memo is clearly designed to blackmail Democrats into caving on negotiations since Democrats are the only ones who actually care about a functioning federal government.
The deranged memo orders department heads to “use this opportunity to consider reduction in force (RIF) notices for all employees in programs, projects, or activities." They are directed to consider slashing the work force in programs that are not "consistent with the president’s priorities.
This is just more of the fascist same from the Trump administration. The ultimate goal of the MAGA movement is to gut the federal government's crucial purposes so that corporations can exert total control over every aspect of our lives. They don't care how much suffering they inflict, so long as their donors' profits keep rising.
