THE QARMATIANS.
- Persian Origin Religious Movement that made Islam tremble.

The Qarmatians were a syncretic, militant Isma'ili Shia movement led by a dynasty of Persian descent, centered in Eastern Arabia (Al-Ahsa). Their leadership was Persian, and their ideology was heavily influenced by Persian culture, Zoroastrian traditions, and esoteric doctrines.

Origins and Identity.
| The movement began in the year 874 ce, in present-day Iraq , under Hamdan Qarmat, whose name gave rise to the term Qarmatian.
Although arabized over time, their ruling dynasty was of Persian descent, and their ideology emerged from a radical branch of Sevener Ismaʿili Shiism.
They envisioned a utopian, egalitarian society and rejected the Fatimid claim to the Imamate, insisting instead on the awaited return of the Mahdi.

The Qarmatian State.
| They found the Qarmatian State of Bahrain (899–1076 ce). Historically, the domain of "Bahrayn" referred to a vast region spanning the coast of the Persian Gulf from Kuwait to Oman, with the archipelago of Awal (modern-day Bahrain) as its center.

Leadership.
| Founded by Hamdan Qarmat, but the powerful Bahrayn state was established by Abu Sa'id al-Jannabi and continued by his son Abu Tahir al-Jannabi, who were described as having Persian ancestry.

Ideology.
| They adhered to a messianic form of Ismaili Shi'ism that broke away from the main Fatimid movement.

Influences.
| Many sources note they were influenced by Persian "Magi" (Zoroastrian) thought, which was perceived as a rejection of traditional Islam.

Sack of Mecca.
| One of his most daring and devastating events: In 930 ce, they famously sacked Mecca, massacring pilgrims, and stealing the Black Stone from the Kaaba to their base in Bahrain(keeping it for two decades), and declaring a young Persian man to be the long-awaited Mahdi.

Activity.
| They were active in the 9th–11th centuries, mainly in Iraq, Syria, and the Persian Gulf.

Their movement aimed to create a utopian, egalitarian state, but they were viewed as heretical and anarchic by the Abbasid and Fatimid Caliphates.
